Critical minerals and the summits
Lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and rare earths power batteries, grids, electronics and defense systems. Securing them has become a standing item for the G7 and G20.

Why it matters
Demand for critical minerals is rising with electric vehicles, renewable power, data centers and defense spending, while processing is concentrated in a small number of countries. That combination has moved minerals from a commodity question to a matter of economic security.
The G7 has adopted action plans on critical minerals, and producer countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia are using the G20 to press for more processing and value at home. Business groups are focused on permitting, financing for new mines and refineries, recycling, and standards that let buyers trace where minerals come from.
On the summit agenda
Diversifying supply
Building mining and refining capacity outside today’s dominant suppliers.
Investment and permitting
Financing new projects and shortening approval times without weakening standards.
Value addition in producer countries
Local processing, jobs and fair partnerships for resource-rich economies.
Recycling and traceability
Recovering minerals from used products and proving responsible sourcing.
