Freedom 250

The U.S. G20 presidency coincides with the nation’s Semiquincentennial, and the Miami 2026 logo carries the America250 mark. Alongside the summit year, Freedom 250 is the national, nonpartisan public-private partnership President Trump announced on December 18, 2025, to lead the celebration of 250 years of American freedom and independence.

Led by CEO Keith Krach, a former under secretary of state, Freedom 250 works with states, companies and organizations on events in all 50 states and abroad, coordinating with the White House Task Force 250, federal departments and the America250 Commission. Its announced program included the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, a national Freedom Tour of schools, the Patriot Games for high school athletes, and free toolkits for teachers and local organizers.

What the G20 is

The G20 was created in 1999 as a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors, after the Asian financial crisis exposed how little the G7 could settle on its own. It was elevated to leaders' level in 2008, in the middle of the global financial crisis, and has met at that level ever since.

Its membership is what makes it different. The G7 is a caucus of allies; the G20 puts the United States, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the European Union around one table. That makes agreement slower and communiqués more heavily negotiated — and it makes the agreements that do emerge considerably more consequential, because they bind the economies that actually move global demand.

Like the G7 it has no secretariat. The presidency rotates annually and the host sets the agenda, convenes the sherpa and finance tracks through the year, and chairs the leaders' summit. The African Union was admitted as a permanent member in 2023.

Current presidency

G20 United States — Miami 2026

The United States assumed the G20 presidency in December 2025 and hosts the leaders' summit at Trump National Doral, Miami, on December 14–15, 2026, chaired by President Donald Trump. The State Department convened the first sherpa meeting in December 2025.

The American presidency has framed its agenda around unleashing economic prosperity — reducing regulatory burden, unlocking affordable energy and pioneering new technologies.

Next presidency

G20 United Kingdom — 2027

The United Kingdom takes the G20 presidency in 2027, confirmed alongside South Korea for 2028 at the Johannesburg summit in November 2025. It will be the first British G20 presidency since 2009.

The stakes are domestic as well as diplomatic: G20 members account for seventeen of Britain's top twenty export markets and eighteen of its top twenty sources of foreign direct investment.

Manchester will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit on November 27–28, 2027. The British government confirmed the choice on September 23, 2026, naming Manchester Central Convention Centre, in the heart of the city, as the venue. Heads of government from the world’s largest economies will gather there for the two-day summit that closes the United Kingdom’s year-long G20 presidency, joined by thousands of diplomats and delegates from international organizations.

The United Kingdom takes over the presidency from the United States in December 2026, after leaders meet at Trump National Doral in Miami. It will be the first British G20 presidency since 2009, when London hosted the summit at the height of the financial crisis and leaders pledged an extra $1.1 trillion to support the world economy.

Why Manchester

The city has a close link to the man who will chair the summit. Prime Minister Andy Burnham served as Mayor of Greater Manchester for almost a decade before taking office in July 2026, and this summer he opened a No 10 North office in the city to sit alongside Downing Street. The choice of Manchester was made before he became prime minister, and it fits his focus on regional growth beyond London.

The government says meetings will be held across the country during the presidency, so that the benefits reach regions beyond the host city. Local leaders expect the summit to give the city’s hospitality and visitor economy a significant boost.

“We’re proud to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Greater Manchester.” Bev Craig, Mayor of Greater Manchester
“It’s a huge honor to be chosen as the host city for the G20.” Garry Bridges, Leader of Manchester City Council

What is at stake

First Secretary of State Louise Haigh said the summit would be a chance to showcase the best of the United Kingdom to the world. The government’s stated aims for the presidency are to reinforce global economic stability and to encourage international investment, which it ties directly to jobs at home: G20 members have brought thousands of investment projects to the UK and created hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The G20 brings together 19 countries, the European Union and the African Union. Its members account for about 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world’s population.

Group of Nations will cover the UK presidency and the Manchester summit in its preview to the G20, B20 and W20 United Kingdom.
